THE BIOBANK AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA

Location

The Biobank Unit at the University Hospital of Jerez is a networked Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia (SSPA). The unit is located at the Clinical Management Unit (UGC) of Pathological Anatomy at the University Hospital of Jerez. The unit’s coordinator (a discretionary role) is from the UGC of Clinical Hematology.

This Biobank Unit was previously part of the Network of Tumour Banks of Andalusia. Since January 2013, the unit has been part of the Biobank network of the Public Health System of Andalusia (SSPA).

Being integrated into the Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation of Cádiz (INiBICA) allows the unit to share the same infrastructure, thereby greatly enhancing the support the unit provides for the research community. This association allows the unit to share infrastructure facilities with the hospital and increase its support to the research community. The unit achieves this by promoting rapid response times facilitated by direct and face-to-face communication with professionals specialized in various fields, offering access to a wide range of samples or data (under the protection of current biomedical legislation), and enabling the adjustment of rates to the benefit of the researcher.

Infrastructure

The Biobank Unit at the University Hospital of Jerez is located on Floor -1 of the General Hospital, in the UGC of Pathological Anatomy. The unit shares materials, resources, and equipment with the UGC laboratory. It also has infrastructure (used in the processing and storing of samples) in the UGC of Clinical Hematology.

In addition, this local unit has access to the auxiliary infrastructure of the Clinical Trials and Research Unit of the Health Management Area of Jerez, Costa Noroeste, and Sierra de Cádiz, which is part of INiBICA.

Professional staff

The unit currently has (i) two predoctoral researchers and part-time collaboration with the senior technicians of pathological anatomy (TSAP) at the UGC of Pathological Anatomy and (ii) a predoctoral researcher and part-time collaboration with the senior laboratory technicians (TSL) at the UGC of Clinical Haematology.

The coordination of the local unit of the Biobank at the University Hospital of Jerez is performed by Dr. Lourdes Hermosín Ramos from the UGC of Hematology. Dr. Marcial García Rojo is the Scientific Director of the Cádiz provincial unit of the SSPA Biobank.

Activities

The primary activities of the Biobank Unit at the University Hospital of Jerez consist of the collection, processing, and preservation of biological samples.

Dissemination of information

The dissemination of information is an activity that has been developed by the Biobank Unit at the University Hospital Jerez. The unit has participated in scientific information dissemination, including the Science Fair in Calle de Jerez. One of the objectives of the SSPA Biobank Network is to make the Biobank’s scientific field and research activities known to the general public. Consequently, we consider our participation in such informative activities particularly important.
